Flooring Types

Comparing Materials

What is the difference between LVP and laminate flooring?

LVP (luxury vinyl plank) and laminate look nearly identical in photos, but they're made from completely different materials — and that difference matters a lot in Florida.

LVP is made entirely of PVC plastic with no wood fiber, making its core highly water-resistant — it handles spills, mopping, and humid environments without swelling, warping, or buckling. Laminate has a wood-fiber core with a photographic print layer on top. It can handle a quick spill if you wipe it up immediately, but prolonged moisture exposure causes the core to swell and the planks to buckle. Once that happens, you're replacing them.

In Florida's climate — especially in homes that warm up between air conditioning cycles — LVP is almost always the better choice. Both materials look great and are durable, but only one is genuinely waterproof.

How do I choose between carpet and LVP for a bedroom?

Both are solid choices. Carpet is warmer underfoot, quieter to walk on, and genuinely comfortable in a room where you're barefoot every day. LVP is easier to clean, doesn't hold allergens, and gives bedrooms a more finished, modern look that's easy to style around.

The honest deciding factors: if you have allergies, pets that sleep in the room, or young kids, LVP is usually the smarter call. If comfort and quiet are the priority and allergens aren't a concern, carpet is hard to beat. Many of our customers put LVP in the primary bedroom and carpet in guest rooms — come into our Holiday showroom and we'll help you think it through in person.

Can LVP be refinished like hardwood?

No — LVP cannot be sanded or refinished. If a plank is damaged, it needs to be replaced individually. Hardwood can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its life, which is a genuine long-term advantage — a well-maintained hardwood floor can last 50 to 100+ years. LVP typically lasts 20 to 30 years depending on the wear layer thickness (look for 12 mil or higher for residential use).

If you're planning a forever floor in a climate-controlled room and budget allows, hardwood is worth considering. For most rooms in a Florida home — especially anywhere humidity is a factor — LVP's waterproof durability makes it the more practical investment.

What flooring brands does Carpet Corner carry?

As a member of the Carpet One buying cooperative, we have access to a wider selection of flooring brands — and better pricing — than most independent retailers. We carry products from Shaw, Mohawk, Stanton, and other trusted manufacturers across all flooring categories.

Our 14,000 sq ft showroom and warehouse in Holiday stocks over 500 products, including carpet, luxury vinyl plank, hardwood, tile, and laminate. The only reliable way to evaluate a floor is to see and touch it in person — stop by any time, no appointment needed.

Florida Climate

Flooring in Florida's Heat & Humidity

What is the best flooring for Florida homes?

For most Florida homes, luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and tile are the two strongest choices. LVP has a water-resistant PVC core, handles humidity exceptionally well, and holds up to the temperature difference between air-conditioned interiors and Florida heat. Tile stays cool, handles moisture in any form, and lasts indefinitely with proper grout maintenance.

Hardwood and laminate can work in climate-controlled bedrooms and low-humidity rooms, but both are vulnerable to warping, cupping, or swelling in homes that get warm between cooling cycles — which is most Florida homes in summer. Engineered hardwood is more stable than solid hardwood and is a better option if you want real wood in a Florida home.

We've been installing floors in Pasco, Pinellas, Hernando, and Hillsborough counties since 1968 and can tell you from experience what holds up best in this climate. Come in and let us walk you through your specific situation.

Is LVP waterproof enough for a Florida bathroom?

Yes. Quality LVP has a water-resistant PVC core all the way through — not just the surface — and is an excellent choice for Florida bathrooms. It handles standing water, steam, and humidity without warping, swelling, or developing mold underneath. The key is proper installation: seams need to be tight and transitions to wet areas sealed correctly.

Tile is the only other material we'd recommend with equal confidence for bathrooms. The choice between LVP and tile in a bathroom comes down to comfort underfoot, style preference, and budget. LVP is warmer and softer to stand on; tile stays cooler and lasts longer. We've installed LVP in hundreds of Tampa Bay bathrooms without issues.

What flooring is easiest to maintain in a Florida home?

Tile and LVP are the easiest flooring types to maintain in Florida. Both resist moisture, don't require special cleaning products, and hold up to sandy foot traffic from outdoor living. LVP can be cleaned with a damp mop and a mild cleaner — no waxing, no refinishing, no seasonal care required. Tile is equally low-maintenance, though grout lines benefit from periodic sealing to prevent staining.

Hardwood requires more attention: consistent humidity control, periodic refinishing every 7 to 10 years, and careful management of spills. Carpet requires more frequent deep cleaning in Florida, where doors stay open and outdoor debris tracks in year-round. Neither is a bad choice — it just depends on how much maintenance effort you're willing to put in.

What is LVP flooring?

LVP stands for luxury vinyl plank. It's a synthetic flooring material made entirely of PVC — no wood fiber, no organic material — which gives it a water-resistant core from top to bottom. LVP is designed to look like hardwood or stone, and modern manufacturing has gotten remarkably close to replicating the texture, grain, and depth of real wood.

It installs as individual planks with a click-lock system and sits directly on most existing subfloors. It's the most popular flooring choice we sell, and in Florida's humid climate, the combination of water resistance, durability, and easy maintenance is hard to argue with. What is the difference between solid hardwood and engineered hardwood?

Solid hardwood is milled from a single piece of wood all the way through. It can be sanded and refinished many times over decades, and it's genuinely beautiful — but solid wood expands and contracts with humidity changes, which makes it a more demanding choice in Florida without consistent climate control.

Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer on top bonded to a plywood or HDF core. That layered construction is more dimensionally stable — it handles humidity swings better than solid hardwood while still giving you a real wood surface that can be refinished. For most Florida installations where you want genuine hardwood, engineered is the more practical option. We carry both and can help you understand which makes sense for your specific rooms. See our hardwood flooring options.

What tile is best for a Florida home?

Porcelain tile is the most durable and moisture-resistant option and the one we recommend most often for Florida homes. It's denser than ceramic, less porous, and rated for both indoor and outdoor use — which matters when you're tiling an entryway, patio, or pool area. Ceramic tile works well for interior floors and walls where it won't face heavy traffic or outdoor conditions.

For flooring, look for a tile with a PEI rating of 3 or higher for residential foot traffic, and 4 or higher for high-traffic areas like entryways and kitchens. We're happy to walk you through ratings and slip resistance when you visit our showroom. Browse our tile flooring options.

Is laminate flooring a good choice in Florida?

Laminate can work in the right conditions, but we're honest with customers about its limitations here. Laminate has a wood-fiber core that swells when it gets wet or sits in a humid environment without climate control. In a home that stays consistently cool and dry, laminate can perform well for years. In a Florida home that warms up seasonally or has any moisture issues, it's a risk.

For most Tampa Bay homes, LVP gives you the same realistic wood look as laminate — and often a better one — with a more water-resistant core. If you're considering laminate, come in and compare it side by side with LVP in our showroom. Learn more about laminate flooring.

Can you install hardwood flooring in a Florida home?

Yes — with the right product and the right rooms. Solid hardwood is more of a commitment in Florida than in drier climates. It expands and contracts with humidity, and in a home that warms up significantly between cooling cycles, that movement can cause gaps, cupping, or squeaking over time. It's not impossible — we've done beautiful solid hardwood installations in Tampa Bay — but it requires a home that stays consistently climate-controlled.

Engineered hardwood is a more forgiving choice for Florida. The layered construction handles humidity changes better than solid hardwood while still giving you a real wood surface that can be refinished. Wide-plank engineered hardwood has become very popular in Tampa Bay homes and holds up well. We'll give you a straight assessment of whether hardwood makes sense in your specific rooms when you come in. Learn more about hardwood flooring in Holiday, FL.

Does humidity affect LVP flooring?

LVP handles humidity better than wood-based flooring because its PVC core doesn't absorb moisture the way hardwood or laminate can. That said, like any flooring, proper installation matters — acclimation before installation and maintaining appropriate expansion gaps help LVP perform well long-term in Florida's climate.

It's one of the more forgiving flooring choices for this region, which is a big part of why it's become so popular here. Learn more about LVP for Florida homes.

Our Process

What to Expect Working With Us

Does Carpet Corner offer free in-home measurements?

Yes — free in-home measurements are included with every estimate. One of our team members will come to your home, measure every room you're considering, note any subfloor conditions or staircase work that could affect the project, and provide a written estimate before any commitment is made.

There's no obligation and no pressure. Fill out the form on our contact page or call us at (727) 849-5273 to schedule a time that works for you.

How long does carpet installation take?

Most residential carpet jobs are completed in a single day. A standard home — two to four bedrooms plus a living area — usually takes our crew four to eight hours depending on room count, layout, and whether furniture needs to be moved. Larger homes or jobs with detailed staircase work may run into a second day.

The measurement visit is scheduled separately and takes about 30 to 45 minutes — that's when we measure every room, assess the subfloor, and get everything we need to prepare an accurate estimate and order the correct amount of material.

Do you use your own installers or subcontractors?

We use our own installation crew — the same team that has built our reputation over more than 55 years. We don't subcontract our installations to third parties. That means the people installing your floor are accountable to us, trained to our standards, and familiar with the products we sell.

About 90% of our business comes from word-of-mouth referrals. That only happens when installations are done right, consistently, by people who take pride in the outcome.

Can you install flooring in a home I'm selling or staging?

Yes — and this is one of the best uses of a flooring investment. New flooring, even a quality LVP at a mid-range price point, dramatically improves how a home shows and typically returns more than its cost at sale.

We work with homeowners, real estate agents, and investors throughout Pasco and Pinellas counties on pre-sale installs. We can prioritize scheduling when you're working against a timeline. Free in-home measurement with no obligation — call (727) 849-5273 to get started.

How long does LVP installation take?

Most LVP jobs are completed in one to two days depending on square footage and room layout. A whole-home re-floor of a typical 1,500–2,000 sq ft Florida home usually takes our crew one full day. Individual rooms or smaller areas go faster. Prep work — moving furniture, removing old flooring, any subfloor repairs — is factored into that timeline.

We schedule a free in-home measurement first, which gives us everything we need to plan the job and order the right amount of material. Request a free measurement online or call (727) 849-5273 to get started.

How long does hardwood flooring installation take?

Solid hardwood installation typically takes two to four days for a standard home. The planks need to acclimate to your home's temperature and humidity for 48–72 hours before installation begins — this is an important step that affects long-term performance and shouldn't be skipped. Engineered hardwood acclimation is shorter, usually 24–48 hours.

The installation itself depends on room count, square footage, staircase work, and pattern complexity. We'll give you a clear timeline estimate during the free measurement visit. Schedule yours here.

Cost & Value

Pricing & What You Get

How much does flooring installation cost in the Tampa Bay area?

Flooring costs vary by material, room conditions, subfloor prep, and project scope — there's no reliable number we can give without seeing the space. Every home is different, and a quote based on square footage alone misses too much.

The best way to get an accurate figure is a free in-home measurement. One of our team members will measure your rooms, assess the subfloor, and give you a written estimate before any commitment is made. No obligation, no pressure. Request a free measurement online or call (727) 849-5273.

Is it worth replacing flooring before selling a home?

In most cases, yes — especially if the existing flooring is worn, dated, or damaged. Buyers form strong first impressions from floors because they cover every room. Fresh flooring often returns more than its cost at sale by shortening days on market and reducing negotiation leverage for buyers.

LVP is typically the most cost-effective choice for pre-sale installs — it's durable, looks great in photos, and appeals to a wide range of buyers. We work with agents and sellers throughout Pasco and Pinellas counties on this regularly. Call us to talk through your specific situation before you commit to anything.
